Remko Schats is a physician, researcher and entrepreneur, and the founder and CEO of Enigma Global eHealth. This startup is building the trusted health record for people who cross borders. It is an international, openEHR-based record that travels with the patient, so the right medical information is available wherever care is needed.

The idea grew out of practice. As a doctor in Tropical Medicine and International Health, Remko worked on humanitarian missions in Ghana, Chad (with Médecins Sans Frontières) and Aceh. He then spent five years caring for seafarers at the Port Health Centre in Rotterdam. Again and again he saw patients whose medical history stayed behind in another country. Seafarers are Enigma Global eHealth’s first focus. Remko also initiated the digitalisation of the WHO yellow vaccination booklet (ICVP) in the Netherlands, and that work feeds into the startup company’s approach to digital vaccination records. In May 2025 he presented it as a mainstage speaker at CISTM19 in New Orleans, the world congress of the International Society of Travel Medicine.

Remko holds a PhD from Leiden University for clinical malaria vaccine trials, which won the Elsevier Clinical Research Award at ASTMH in 2013. He also completed the Executive MBA at Rotterdam School of Management, where he was named Ambassador of the 2022 cohort. Enigma Global eHealth has gone through the UtrechtInc incubator, is a member of Barcelona Health Hub, and collaborates with the Erasmus School of Health Policy & Management. It is also an affiliated partner of the Dutch Global Health Hub of the Netherlands Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport.

Remko is Vice-President of FESTMIH, the Federation of European Societies for Tropical Medicine and International Health. He lectures and gives workshops on leadership for professionals in health and business, using his network and skills from his Executive MBA.
